| We could see the Arc de Triomphe all the way up the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, and we reached it around dinner time. Sara was fatigued, and didn't share my interest in huge structures. She wanted to spend our last evening in Paris peacefully in our hotel room. So she took the Metro back without me. The monument, commissioned by Napoleon to commemorate his
military victories, is an arrogant imitation of the ancient triumphal arches that we saw in Rome. It made for a nice picture after sunset though. Upon returning to our room, I found that Sara had prepared a romantic Parisian candlelit dinner for us, consisting of simple breads, cheeses, fruit and wine from the corner market. I was quite impressed, and we had a wonderful evening, but once again fell victim to the tranquilizing effects of wine! Read more |
